Essential Functions:
• Assignments may include teaching introductory and general physics and physical science courses, astronomy;
• teaching trigonometry and calculus based physics courses for majors and non majors;
• use a variety of pedagogies, and integrate a wide range of instructional delivery systems including innovative and creative uses of technology for face-to-face, on-line, and/or hybrid formats;
• participating in department and division meetings, departmental subcommittees, and student club activities;
• responsible for remaining current in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula including the development or improvement of laboratory experiments;
• assisting in the program review process, the assessment of student learning outcomes, and participating in college-wide committees and community outreach;
• taking part in campus and district participatory governance structures; and
• otherwise fulfilling all the duties and responsibilities of instructional staff as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
NOTE : Will be required to teach classes at Reedley and Madera campuses.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Include an earned master’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics; OR
• bachelor’s degree in physics or astronomy and master’s degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics; OR
• a valid California Community College credential; OR
• the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency)ANDApplicants must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies based on physics education research;
• commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with science instructors, laboratory technicians, and other colleagues;
• express an enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed;
• have an ability to develop curriculum in emerging areas of physics and astronomy;
• exhibit the capacity to contribute to the total operation of the instructional program including Department, Division, and College responsibilities;
• demonstrated ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning;
• and knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
Conditions of Employment:
177 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is $54,029 – $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
