DescriptionLong Beach Community College District is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenure track Astronomy Instructor commencing with the 2017 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves astronomy lecture classes (with some laboratory classes) in the LBCC planetarium and to design and evaluate curriculum for entry-level science students. The assignment may also include teaching physics courses as needed. The position could include public service and outreach activities such as public planetarium shows and astronomy open houses. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.

The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Long Beach Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of Astronomy.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

• Master's in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR• Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR meet equivalent qualifications established by the District, AND• Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understand of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:• Educational and/or instructional preparation in Astronomy.• Previous experience teaching Astronomy especially at the community college level.• Ability to foster student success using active versus passive learning with students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of academic skills, while maintaining academic standards.• Ability to teach in an all-electronic (no whiteboard) classroom and to work with computers, multimedia and other technologies which are utilized in providing high-quality classroom and lab instruction.• Teaching experience in a planetarium setting (we have an Evans and Sutherland Digistar 3SP2 planetarium projection system with a 35' dome).• Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues in a collegial manner.• Ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing and using electronic presentations in the classroom and to address the needs of diverse and frequently underprepared student populations.• Interest in developing curriculum to meet student needs and strong commitment to scientific literacy, the community college system and general education science courses.• Ability to effectively use telescopes and other astronomical equipment in a laboratory course.• Evidence of participation in conferences and professional organizations.• A commitment to stay current with the latest developments in astronomy, and with astronomy education research.• Ability to write scripts to program our planetarium projection system and share scripts for the benefit of other instructors' students.• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.• Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of Long Beach Community College District.• The College seeks candidates who exhibit an understanding and commitment to the community college mission, and who have a passion for commitment to student success.

Additional InformationSalary range of $65,624 - $85,459 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. Salary Schedule - 1
