The Ames Laboratory is seeking an Assistant Scientist for research support in the area of surface science. The appointment will be made at the Assistant Scientist I or II level.  

Assistant Scientist I:  Entry level position to provide technical and scientific support for surface science research within the Ames Laboratory. Position will conduct experiments; analyze and report scientific data; maintain and modify research equipment; assist in the preparation of manuscripts, research reports, and proposals; and train group members on standard operating procedures within the laboratory.  

Assistant Scientist II:
Provide complex professional level scientific support in surface science research within the Ames Laboratory by conducting experiments; analyzing and reporting scientific data; maintaining, modifying and designing research equipment; and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts, research reports, and proposals. This position will also assist students in data interpretation and the appropriate use of computer software and train group members in laboratory methods and use of research equipment.

Position requires the ability to lift up to 30 lbs, and perform tasks of manual labor such as tightening bolts using both hands. Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination is needed to repair small, complex pieces of equipment. Work may occur during non-standard hours in order to optimize performance of vibration-sensitive equipment.

The successful candidate will have the ability to manage time productively while engaged in multiple ongoing projects, to resolve or circumvent conflicts, and to work productively with a wide variety of individuals.  

Required qualifications:  Assistant Scientist I:
Bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences or engineering plus one year of related experience.

Assistant Scientist II:
Bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences or engineering plus 4 years of related experience OR a Master's degree in physical science or engineering plus 2 years of related experience.  

Preferred qualifications:  Prior research experience in surface science or related field; Technical experience or coursework dealing with computer hardware and software; Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex equipment/instrumentation; Experience with vacuum equipment; Prior experience writing research reports; Publications in refereed scientific or technical journals.
